How could you do it—
steal my breath away like that
—a fox in the night
moonstruck and foaming
at the mouth as I kiss you
our souls intertwined
you brought me to peace
and then tore me to pieces
Shinto shrine maiden
How could you do it—
steal my breath away like that
—a fox in the night
moonstruck and foaming
at the mouth as I kiss you
our souls intertwined
you brought me to peace
and then tore me to pieces
Shinto shrine maiden
Romance at the shinto man. A fine poem

First you’re up, and then you’re down…such is love. Great poem, O.

Love this Og! Nice to see you playing with the form. I think I’ll try this sort of thing – telling a story with the haiku.
The line “foaming at the mouth” is jarring and disconcerting, but that challenge makes it all the more wonderful. Well done!

Thanks very much, Kathleen. To write haiku properly is pretty much beyond me to be honest, but I do enjoy experimenting with the syllable count. Thanks for reading.

When love’s no longer burning, it can get cold and biting. Lyrical, beautiful, and doomed.

In the story in my mind for this poem, the shrine maiden is a fox spirit that has taken human form. A man falls in love with her. She loves him back but it cannot be, because they are from different worlds. It’s based on an old Japanese folk tale. Thank you for reading, Mich.

Got to the folk tale right away…. you wily poet, you! A subject so well handled and so likely to handle the reader back…
