One for the Weekend

“I have a total irreverence for anything connected with society except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper and the old men and old women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer.”–Brendan Behan

  3. reverence is not something to hand out lightly…one has to have priorities 🙂 As the big storm barrels down on us in the Pacific Northwest, keeping the power lines in order is right up there.

  4. Brendan Behan was a badass! I looked him up after reading the quote which I can believe he wrote as he seemed to have had little respect for authority. It’s too bad he died so young, but it seems Behan partied hard quite a bit. Brilliant but haunted…

You really should read Borstal Boy. One of my favourites. He had a hard life…for some people, writing without drinking is impossible, but of course that isn’t infinitely sustainable. The quality of his writing plummeted with his fame but you could still see the genius shining through. Glad you’re back in action, Rose, you were sorely missed.

      • Borstal Boy. I’ll look it up! I lost my best friend in July whom I’d known since I was 18. He was a very successful, functioning alcoholic. Not many people knew his vice. Like Behan, he was brilliant but never could stay away from drinking. He, too, died young.

I lost my mind for a few months and think I’ve found it again. My heart, on the other hand, will always be broken, but it helps to write.

Thank you, my sweet Og. I think about you and am glad to be back. xx

Thank you, Rose. My thoughts are with you, and with your friend as well. I hope you can find peace through your writing, which heals others as well, though you may not always know it.
