A Song for Old Friends

Be young

Be merry

Have no cares

Have no worry

Have yourself a drink

Have yourself a song

Have yourself a time

For it never lasts too long

In our youth in dreaming fields

We stared upon the stars

“That is what we’re made of, boys—

that is what we are!”

Yesterday we ourselves

Were the patter of little feet.

This morning we are the boots

Marching in the street.

Tonight in dwindling numbers

We will raise our glasses high

For tomorrow we give fine speeches

And ignore our mother’s cries

And in our age we’ll wonder

As we stare at dust and earth

For that is what we are, boys

And that is what we’re worth

This a fine piece. It is a journey filled with representations of life–an examination of mortality and a tribute to tradition. It could even be sung. Well done!

An excellent poem that cries out
for music. Irish music. Irish, I tells ya. 😃

Hope you enjoyed the poem. I like writing (or trying to write) things that have an open meaning, or at least a double meaning, so that they can mean something to everyone.
Your poetry reads as if you wrote it effortlessly, but I’m sure that’s probably not the case. That’s the mark of a true poet. It would be interesting to know what your creative process is like.
Many thanks for stopping by to read and comment.

      • I enjoyed reading your poem so very much! There’s truth and humor in what you write — raw beauty, as well. Thank you for your kind words, Og. I was so happy to discover your blog more than a year ago now.

It’s wonderful how the miles that separate us all here at WP are insignificant when our words bridge that gap. Someday, perhaps, we’ll mull over our creative process over beer or tea. 🙂 ❤

Yes, beer in the evening and tea in the morning. 🙂
I’m only joking, of course. You’ve been a tremendous help to me in so many ways, I’ll never be able to repay you for that. Thank you so much for your thoughtful words.

      • Haha! Oh, what an imagination!! That was actually very clever and naughty. 😀
Who could not stop and try to help a lost soul? Lol. I’m joking — you’re very sweet, and I did nothing but get captivated by your writing. You’re much too humble!

  7. the words conjure both a welcomed celebration of life; yet also the sentiments of (WWI) soldiers facing the possibility of not returning home…isn’t that why we should live our life the best, no matter the age, for we do not know how tomorrow shall unfold.
